Personally, I don’t think MBA’s are necessary, no. While I believe in education and furthering your knowledge, an MBA doesn’t assure you will land a PM job (or any other job.) Understand first that any certification or advanced learning is an investment in your future, regardless of the outcome. If you have the means to spend the money, go for it. If you don’t, be mindful that nothing can ever ‘guarantee’ you will get a job. I’d look at free courses and reading where you can to soak up as much knowledge before investing money you may not have available!

Hey Paola! Terribly sorry for the late reply here, but better late than never! What’s really key in PM is showing you have an understanding in problem solving. Your role is to ask all the right questions, not to necessarily have all the answers. Writing is a good place to start, and having a portfolio of things you have written ready to share. This will certainly show off your comms and writing skills, and on those posts where you can show off your problem solving or critical skills, it’ll be an added bonus. I’d also suggest looking at mentorship programs or junior positions to get going.

Hey there, apologies for the late reply here. I don’t know how far you’ve gotten on your path to a PM, but sometimes it’s good to start with something like an associate role or a junior role to warm up. Likewise, straight PM isn’t the only road to product. I started in support and that helped me iron out some of the writing and comms skills, which are really important when it comes to product. Good luck!

Hey Sheala, sorry it took over a year to get back to you, I hadn’t been taking notice of replies. But as they say, better late than never! I hope you’ve managed to move forward on your path to becoming a product manager. I just said this recently in a podcast – becoming a PM is less about knowing ‘how to code’ or having a tech background, and more about having the right level of communicate and empathy. It’s a tough job, but super rewarding.
